Meet Michael Apodaca, Retail Sales Associate for Cox Communications, who believes in living one day at a time.

We interviewed Michael to learn more about his ability to take advantage of life’s important lessons and how to use them to build a better future.

How has working for Cox Communications impacted your life?

Cox is more than an internet and technology company. We do so much for employees around wellness and providing counselors. Today, six years sober, I am proud of my growth and my desire to push forward. I love coming to work!

Do you have a daily motto that you like to live by?

Live one day at a time. I am open and honest about sharing my story with others because I aspire to be inspiring.

Describe what it’s like working for Cox Communications.

Every day that I get to work with customers, I learn more about the power of listening. Customers just want to be heard. At Cox, we believe that if we connect with our consumers on an emotional level, then we are able to solve their problems. And by listening to my customers, that’s also how I can demonstrate the value of our products.

What gets you excited to come to work every day?

My team members! As a team, we respond to each other very well. There are times when we may not see eye to eye but we quickly resolve and are right back to where we started. It’s an amazing dynamic, because our leadership team keeps up this positivity and customers can feel the energy when they walk into our store.

What’s the most important take-away readers should have from our discussion?

It’s a true family culture at Cox Communications, and I’ve never felt this way about any job. It’s a place where I feel emotionally and physically safe and a place where I can at my very best.

Meaningful Connections

Myriam Gomez, bilingual Retail Sales Associate for Cox Communications, shares an intercultural experience that she will never forget.

One afternoon a customer of Persian descent walked into my Cox Communications solutions store for assistance. Our solutions store in Arizona is very diverse however we didn’t have anyone on the team who spoke Farsi. That’s when I grabbed a pen and paper, and he and I began to communicate. We were writing things down, pointing to the computer screens, and I used objects within the store to demonstrate. Even though we didn’t speak the same language, I found a way to connect with him and he left that afternoon feeling happy. That’s number one for us, we take care of our customers and he completed our consumer survey giving us a high rating.

With Spanish being my first language, I couldn’t help but empathize with this customer. It wasn’t long ago that I struggled understanding English. When I was just eight years old my family and I came to the U.S. as immigrants. I grew up in California and started working at 17-years-old for a wireless phone company where I moved up, became a manager, and served for 10 years. I later got engaged to my fiancé Adrian and we decided to relocate to Arizona.

It was a big adjustment to leave California, missing my friends, family and the sandy beaches but I took the time to work on developing my English-speaking skills. I wanted to feel most confident speaking with customers which is why I was so grateful to join Cox Communications.

At Cox my team has been super positive about helping me with English. I also found great support in my manager Brian Lehmer. He’s a fantastic leader and when he sees potential, he believes in bringing out the best in people. In my role as Retail Sales Associate, I am grateful for the opportunity to work for a company like Cox that is so inclusive and diverse. My goal is to one day be a leader just like my manager Brian who has helped me become more comfortable and open minded to the opportunities at Cox. I love my job and would not change anything about my journey. I believe my career at Cox is off to a great start.

    Day in the Life of an Account Executive

    Meet Kristina Hogins, Senior Enterprise Account Executive for Cox Business.

    Hi Kristina! Tell me a little bit about your background and what led you to your current job.

    I was born in Anchorage, AK and moved a lot growing up. I spent time in Orange County, North Carolina, and Sacramento. I moved to San Diego in 2005 to attend San Diego State University. I have planted my roots in San Diego (the weather and amazing people kept me here) and I call it home! I began my telecom sales career at a small company. They were hiring young college graduates willing to work hard and cold call 50 businesses a day. These skills allowed me to start a career in sales with Cox Business. I began as a Territory Rep and have worked my way up the chain by becoming a Mid-Market rep and now a Senior Enterprise Rep. This proves Cox Business believes in its employees and helps us grow and achieve our goals.

    What do you enjoy most about your job? How do you spend your time when you’re not at work?

    I enjoy the people I work with! We have an outstanding team that works together and delivers to our customers when they rely on us most. I’m proud to say I work at Cox Business, San Diego because of the people I’m surrounded by!

    When I’m not at work you can find me traveling or doing something active outside. This seems cliché but when you live in San Diego and the weather is always perfect you have to enjoy it. I love going to the beach, hiking, taking my Rottweiler (Max) to the dog park, and being social with friends. I got married 3 months ago (December 2017) and my husband and I went to Singapore and Bali for our Honeymoon. I love trying new foods, meeting new people, and exploring other cultures.

    How has Cox supported you in your career growth?

    Cox Business has always supported me in my career growth. They have sponsored networking groups and lead generating activities. All my managers and directors have an open-door policy so if I need coaching or advice they are always available to help.

      3x sales champ reflects on his successes at work and at home

      Khalil Al-Amir, Cox Business Security Sales Manager, shares an inspiring story of courage and sacrifice plus the key Ingredients to his success.

      I was born in Syria, a beautiful country ripped apart by war. When I was just 5 years old, my parents, my two sisters, and I fled to Rhode Island. We already had some family arrive before us – my aunt and uncle and grandparents.

      My parents left friends, family, jobs, our home – everything – to give my sisters and me a better life, a safe life. Can you imagine what courage that took? My parents never speak of the sacrifices they made for us. But my sisters and I know, and we will never forget. It helps drive me every day.

      Beyond my courageous parents, I have been fortunate to have worked with great leaders at Cox. They encourage me, give me feedback, and like my father, push me to be and do my best.

      Sales has always been my passion, and developing talent has become another one as I grow into this leadership role.

      I’m a very competitive person, and every day, I’m inspired by the people around me. I think good salespeople must be like athletes, where the ultimate motivation is the desire to win and be the best.

      As Security Sales Manager, half my time is spent in the office doing admin work and meetings, but the other half is out in the field. I love being in the field! My time in the field allows me to meet potential clients and support my team.

      My secret sauce to success is to be good to your people, and they will be good for you. I have built mutual trust with my team that is needed in a sales environment.

      Back in Syria, my parents were very respected; they were teachers, which are very honored positions. When I got older, I remember working alongside my father as a landscaper. He taught me that whatever job you do, you give it your best, and be proud of what you are doing.

      That’s why I support my team where they need it most to make sure they have the autonomy to run their business.

      My mother also inspired me, she gave me my biggest motivation – always be positive! I do not allow myself to have a bad day. I live by the motto “if you can, change it; if you can’t, change your attitude about it.”

      I worked hard to achieve my goals, and my proudest accomplishment, on top of my successes that Cox offered me, is when I purchased a home.

      I have only been working at Cox for seven years. But in that time, I’ve received several promotions including three invitations to the Winner’s Circle, an annual awards ceremony recognizing high-achieving sales professionals with a great vacation trip. In my third year, I relocated to Las Vegas to help set up the Centers of Excellence, and shortly after, I received another promotion, bringing me home to Rhode Island. I mention these accomplishments to make my point  – you can achieve great things at Cox!

        Fatherhood Changed My Life

        How fatherly lessons changed Stephen Spinner’s outlook on life and how to make the best of any situation by boasting positivity, motivation, and selflessness.

        When your kids are born, you have unconditional love for them because they belong to you. But for Stephen Spinner, parenthood was a little different. He met Jose when he was 4-years-old after learning that Jose’s mother could no longer support him.

        Stephen stepped into fatherhood as a single parent to now, nine-year-old Jose. Stephen’s newly minted relationship with Jose helped strengthen his own relationship with his father, Charles. After a few short weeks of parenting turned into a few months, Jose lived with Stephen for a year. During this time Stephen taught Jose how to be respectful, how to enjoy the treasures of life, including vacationing to New Jersey, sight-seeing and visiting family. Jose also, like any kid, enjoyed video games and took on Karate as an afterschool activity. Stephen admits that during this time he developed a great relationship with his father which made him extremely happy.

        “The opportunity to help someone else gave me the greatest experiences of my life,” Stephen shared.

        After four years passed, Stephen lost his father Charles and Jose also left to reconcile with his mother. While these times brought a lot of grief, it did not stop Stephen from remaining positive and motivated to keep making a difference.

        “There are so many people less fortunate than I am, in more challenging circumstances, and with bigger struggles to overcome. I don’t have a good enough reason to be a negative person,” said Stephen.

        That’s when Stephen joined Cox Communications, starting out in the call center working on the retention team or “Saving Our Customers” team as he describes. However, it didn’t take long for him to realize that Sales is where he wanted to grow. Stephen is a part of the Multiple Dwelling Units Direct Sales team in Phoenix, Arizona. He has been working with Cox for two and a half years now.

        “I’ve always been more of a face-to-face person, so when I had the opportunity, I searched for different positions where I’d be able to deal more directly with customers.”

        Stephen’s experience at Cox has been quite memorable.

        “This is an amazing company to work for because my team is full of motivated and professional people. What makes the biggest difference to me is the leadership within the company. Every leader that I have reported to has been available to listen, help, and support.”

        Stephen goes on to share how the company has helped him to grow and appreciates the culture of open communication.

        “Knowing that my voice matters to the company I work for is a big deal. We are developing and producing services and technologies that are shaping the future of the industry, and it’s important that Cox is a forward-thinking company. We are always looking for ways to improve our products and make our name the industry standard.”

        Stephen’s upbeat personality and outlook on his career also carry over to his personal life. He strongly believes in staying positive and motivated in his health too. He is active in CrossFit, enjoys hiking and cycling, and plays basketball. On top of that, Stephen is very selfless and is always putting others before himself best modeling what Cox Stands for – doing the right thing, always and leading by example.

        Want to know about the Cox SUMMER SOCIAL?

        The 2019 Cox Summer Social was sizzling this year as we got a crash course in esports and welcomed players, the head coach, costumed fans and the general manager from the Atlanta Reign.

        Our President and CEO Alex Taylor kicked off the Cox Summer Social with the introduction of our special guests the Overwatch League’s Atlanta Reign team, our company’s most recent investment. He shared how the team came about and admitted that he wasn’t sold initially on the idea of people watching other people play video games. But the more he learned about it, the more convinced he became that esports was on its way to becoming a booming industry. In fact, esports are predicted to have more viewers than every professional sports league but the NFL by 2021 — surpassing the MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS.

        An Esports Overview

        Soe Gschwind-Penski, a commentator, host and international celebrity in the gaming community, provided a quick overview of esports before hosting a brief discussion with our Chief Financial Officer Dallas Clement and our special guest, the President and CEO of Atlanta Esports Ventures Paul Hamilton. The discussion was about the journey of owning and operating our first esports team and our partnership with Province Inc. to form Atlanta Esports Ventures.

        Our event was decked out with vintage arcade games, while employees enjoyed ice cream on the outdoor lawn and more games under the tent. While others scored some free swag items, souvenirs and peeked inside the Atlanta Reign’s official team van. Fans also got a chance to meet Atlanta Reign players Babybay, Kodak and Gator, head coach Brad Rajani, and take pictures with cosplayers (costumed characters) from the Overwatch game.

          Ever wonder what it’s like to lead a team of sales reps? Or perhaps you’ve been curious to know what sales leaders look for when they are hiring a new rep. We sat down with three advertising sales leaders from Cox Media, Inc. who lead teams of all sizes from different states to learn some of the secrets to their success.

          Cox Media, Inc. (CMI), is the advertising sales division of Cox Communications with locations across the U.S., and behind the success of this division is a force of sales representatives who find creative advertising solutions for their clients. Let’s meet Suzanne Banks-Russell, based in Mobile, Ala. who’s been with us four years; Baton Rouge-based and 13-year rep Dirk Hofman; and San Diego-based representative Maria McRoberts celebrating 20 years at Cox.

          What do you love about your job?

          Suzanne: Meeting a wide range of business people and helping them grow. We have a growing portfolio of solutions with something perfect for everyone, no matter the size, business type or budget. I also love how people-focused Cox is and our corporate values. I’m proud to work for Cox.

          Dirk: I love that every day is an adventure. The morning starts with a cup of coffee and then you never know where it will take you. In sales, we have no dull moments.

          How do you proactively delight your customers?

          Dirk: I try to stay relevant. If I send customers the same stuff all the time, I become part of the noise. I try to think ahead and make everything relevant to the customer.

          Maria: I remind my clients how much I appreciate their trust in me and how much I value our partnership. More importantly, I do this FACE TO FACE!

          What advice do you have for new members of the sales team? New employees, in general?

          Suzanne: Cox is an amazing company. Invest time in learning about our company’s history and corporate culture. Don’t rush past our training. You can’t be effective for your clients if you don’t understand our products and solutions.

          Dirk: Keep moving forward. Don’t get stuck in something you feel like you could have done better. I always tell new people that when they fail (and they will), Fail Forward. Make mistakes and learn from them. This is the best way to grow and succeed.

          Maria: Take advantage of our excellent company training programs and continue to be a life-long learner. Our company benefits are second-to-none. Sign up for everything and stay informed!

          How can non-sales employees help us to reach our sales goals?

          Suzanne: EVERYONE is a sales employee. Not everyone has face-to-face interaction with our customers, but they need to be ready. Non-sales-employees should take pride and ownership as much as anyone else. Everyone should be part of the goal. Whether it’s a new commercial, a new business popping up in your neighborhood or billboard, tell someone. Everyone can help.

          Maria: Non-Sales employees in our organization are some of our best and finest. I find that their ongoing support and encouragement is what makes our sales organization stand out and succeed.

          We’re not a ‘Dress Shirt and Tie’ Kind of Company

          Find out why that matters to Cox Communications employees Todd Tang and Bailey Young Smith, and why they say life at Cox is awesome.

          “When someone asks, ‘where do you work’ and I say Cox Media, their eyeballs seem to light up as I explain the portfolio of digital elements that we offer as a major company,” Advertising Account Executive Todd Tang said. “Yes, we are more than a TV and cable business; we offer digital advertising solutions too.”

          Cox Media, the advertising sales arm of Cox Communications, helps business owners of all sizes advertise through advanced cable TV and online digital solutions. It’s rewarding work, and one that helps not only the local business owner, but the community they serve. And Advertising Account Executives, like Todd, are on the front lines of that important work.

          “In our world, there’s a ton of collaborating,” said fellow Account Executive Bailey Young Smith. “We get to work with our marketing team, analysts and research teams, all based on our client needs.”

          That collaboration and knowledge sharing is important, and has been especially for Todd, who leaned on teammates like Bailey during his first few months with the company.

          So then, what brought Bailey to Cox initially?

          “I’m a longtime resident of Arizona and worked for other digital companies, tech startups and even a magazine,” Bailey shared. “But I felt like I had plateaued and there wasn’t much room for me to grow. When I began interviewing for my role at Cox, I was in the process of getting married. It was a very hectic time and while I wasn’t considering doing both a life and career change at once, it sort of happened that way and I’ve been here ever since.”

          With a great team atmosphere, lots of activities outside of work and a culture of giving back to the community, Cox Media provides tremendous opportunity for career growth and career satisfaction.

          “We’re not a dress shirt and tie kind of company, either,” Todd said, “and a lot of millennials love that lifestyle of flexibility and less formal attire. Millennials are starting to become the new sales force with their trending experiences in social and digital, and a lot of other employers don’t offer that culture.”

          “We have fun here,” Bailey chimed in. “We have an internal group called the People Focus Culture, and we celebrate fun holidays like Cookie Day or National Ice Cream day with in-office ice cream parties.”

          On any given day you can find Todd golfing, hiking or visiting restaurants with friends. Bailey looks forward to weekend bike-riding and brunching with friends at local, organic restaurants.

          And they both have their sights set on building successful, long-term careers at Cox.

          There’s No Place Like Home…at Cox Media

          There aren’t many companies where you can walk into your vice president’s office to ask questions, invite them to lunch or just simply say hello — that’s what it’s like working at Cox Media.

          Cox Media is the advertising sales division of Cox Communications. It’s a huge open-door policy here where anybody, no matter what level in the organization, can talk to our leaders about anything, whether it’s getting advice, giving feedback or discussing opportunities for change.

          I started at Cox Media Inc right after college. I’m originally from southern California where I attended the University of La Verne, and received my bachelor’s degree in broadcast radio with a minor in marketing. During my final year of school, I wasn’t quite sure which direction to head, so after graduation I flew to Arizona for 10 days to attend the Media Sales Institute hosted by the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation.

          Throughout my time at the institute I had the chance to meet and work with different media companies across the country. However, Cox Media stood out to me right away.

          I was attracted to the company right from the start; everybody was so educated in their industry and spoke well in front of the group of students. I think what stood out the most was that no one from Cox Media had a bad word to say about other companies there. I could tell this was the kind of culture I wanted to be a part of. When I got a call letting me know that they had a Sales Associate role open and offered it to me, I was excited to come, jump in and get started with my career.

          I had never left the state of California before, but Fran Mallace and the rest of the team at Cox made me feel comfortable enough to relocate to a state like Arizona because I had a good support system. I could tell I already had a wonderful support system from the leaders at Cox Media, who were not only vice presidents and directors, but truly mentors, friends and family that wanted to guide you and invest in you.

          Now that I have grown from a Sales Associate to an Advertising Account Executive, I have witnessed so many factors that make working for Cox Media something truly unique. Everybody hears the buzz of why working for Cox Media is the best, and those that come from other companies stay at Cox for a long-time career.

          As time goes on, I’m truly blessed that I get to learn from and work alongside the best of the best. I will soon reach my two-year anniversary and as someone taking their first steps in their career, I’m especially looking forward to more opportunities for growth at this wonderful company. I know that wherever I end up in this Cox umbrella, I will have a lasting career.
