The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is seeking an ambitious, talented reporter to join the News Team covering metro Atlanta. An ideal fit for this job is someone who is skilled at reporting and storytelling and engaging residents and readers with coverage about their interests and concerns.

This reporter will be assigned to cover one or more topics, which could include crime and public safety, health, local government and local communities, or K-12 education.

  • The reporter filling this role must be skilled at delivering breaking news and topic coverage, including occasional enterprise and accountability reporting.
  • The reporter serves readers in print and digital editions. This journalist reports and writes with a strong sense of urgency and energy, distinguishing the AJCs coverage and building loyalty among readers.
  • This reporter will build a network of community contacts in order to ensure awareness of those issues that resonate with our readers. It will be this reporter's responsibility to capture those conversations in news reports.
  • This reporter must be able to produce clean, organized publication-ready copy with a minimum of supervision. The reporter must be an adept storyteller who can translate government or institutional action into relevance for readers.
  • The reporter will use various distribution outlets such as social, print and digital, and must be able to use a variety of storytelling tools including video, data, other narrative elements and emerging digital-only formats.
  • The position also requires that the reporter use our metrics tools to understand and grow digital audience. The reporter must also demonstrate capacity to use the Internet as a reporting tool.


  • College degree preferred.


  • 1-3 years of professional journalism experience#CD# internships and other related experience can be considered.
  • Experience covering a beat with government and community connections preferred.
  • Strong record of serving audiences in a fast-paced, productive environment that is shaped by research, audience metrics and audience needs in print and in digital.

*Additional experience, skills and qualifications may qualify an applicant for a Local Reporter, Lead Local Reporter or Senior Reporter role.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to develop reader-focused story ideas and write about topics with clarity and accuracy. The beat requires news and occasional enterprise and accountability coverage.
  • Familiar with the use of government records and the state and federal open records acts.
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet and database programs a plus.
  • Fluent in another language other than English a plus, but not required
  • Organized and able to juggle multiple stories simultaneously and produce both daily and longer-term stories.
  • Uses time effectively, meeting deadlines and producing an acceptable volume of work. Consistently meets deadlines set for print and digital needs, including advance deadlines.
  • Produces smartphone photos and videos and collects data and other information for maps, charts and other supplemental content. Digital skills are a growing part of this job.
  • Generates work that is balanced, fair, accurate and complete, incorporating, where appropriate, a diverse range of sources. Copy should not contain errors of fact or judgment and should not include any issue of political bias.
  • Engages editors on best ways to present stories on digital and print platforms.
  • Has an understanding of libel law and able to recognize and flag potential legal issues that could expose the company to litigation over libel, invasion of privacy, copyright or other issues.

  • Reliable internet access required to work remotely.
  • In-office work environment not available every day#CD# some at-home officing or other remote work required
  • Permanent residence in metro Atlanta required
  • Local travel required. Therefore, a successful candidate will need a reliable vehicle to cover the news
