The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is seeking an ambitious, talented reporter to a cover a local government beat in Cobb County in metro Atlanta. An ideal fit for this job is someone who is skilled at covering city and/or county government actions and engaging residents with coverage about their concerns. The reporter will build a deep base of sources in government and among the community.

This reporter covers Cobb County, Ga., metro Atlanta’s third largest county, which is home to The Atlanta Braves, Home Depot, and a rapidly growing and demographically shifting suburban environment. Cobb is at the heart of Georgia’s “swing state” status, transitioning rapidly from a long-time Republican stronghold to a more Democratic region. This makes for fascinating stories such as debates over COVID and masking policy, the role of density in community growth and the challenges of a rapidly diversifying community.

The reporter is responsible for daily reporting on the county's operations and will focus on unearthing inefficiencies and wasteful spending of public dollars, providing accountability reporting and watchdogging whether decisions made by community leaders yield positive results.

This reporter will also write about political trends, relevant state legislative actions and public policy.

The reporter also will cover the social fabric that shapes residents’ lifestyles and community values and will spotlight the unique people who call Cobb home.

This reporter will establish a large network of community contacts in order to ensure awareness of those issues that resonate with our audience. It will be this reporter's responsibility to capture those conversations in news reports.

This reporter must be able to produce clean, organized publication-ready content with a minimum of supervision. The reporter needs to be an adept storyteller who can translate government action into relevance for readers.

The reporter will use various distribution outlets such as social, print and digital, and must be able to use a variety of storytelling tools including video, data, other narrative elements and emerging digital-only formats.

Local communities are high engagement topics at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The reporter filling this role must be skilled at delivering breaking news, smart, engaging enterprise and accountability reporting and serving readers in print and digital editions.

The position also requires that the reporter use our metrics tools to understand and grow digital audience. The reporter must also demonstrate capacity to use the Internet as a reporting tool.

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience required

  • 3 years of professional journalism experience preferred; comparable experience through internships and other roles will be considered for outstanding candidates.

  • Strong record of serving audiences in a fast-paced, productive environment that is shaped by research, audience metrics and audience needs in print and in digital.

  • Ability to develop strong, reader-focused story ideas and write about complex concepts with clarity and authority. The beat requires news, enterprise and accountability coverage.

  • Familiar with the use of government records and the state and federal open records acts.

  • Knowledge of spreadsheet and database programs a plus.

  • Fluent in another language other than English a plus, but not required

  • Organized and able to juggle multiple stories simultaneously.

  • Excellent communication skills with a collaborative attitude.

  • Capacity to shoot own photographs when needed.

Additional experience, skills and qualifications may qualify an applicant for a Reporter II role.

  • Reliable internet access required to work remotely.

  • In-office work environment not available every day; some at-home officing or other remote work required

  • Permanent residence in metro Atlanta required

  • Local travel required. Therefore, a successful candidate will need a reliable vehicle to cover the news
