Senior newsroom leader/Life and Culture Editor
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is seeking a senior newsroom leader to guide coverage of several key and expanding content areas as we grow from a storied newspaper to a modern media organization.
This will be an important role in the most exciting newsroom in America. We are investing to expand our audience, influence and mission across Atlanta, Georgia, the South and beyond.
We are seeking a visionary leader who can create and embrace new approaches to connect and build audiences in one of America’s most important and vital cities and the region.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced senior leader who has led teams, shaped coverage and grown digital audience. The candidate should have experience in and passion for the topics to be supervised, including Black culture, food & dining, entertainment, go and do, and other lifestyle/feature topics like profiles, home/real estate, wellness/consumer health and others.
One of the most important areas this leader will tackle immediately will be expansion of our Black culture topic, currently centered in our Unapologetically ATL newsletter. We expect to develop this coverage into a key brand franchise that could draw significant audience in Atlanta, Georgia, the South and elsewhere. The Life and Culture Editor will work with AJC leadership to develop a coverage vision, scope and staged business plan for audience and subscriber growth in this franchise.
The role will be at the director or senior director level, depending on experience and qualifications, and will supervise two to five team leaders and their teams
KEY DUTIES

Provides overall leadership and oversight to teams that may include Atlanta Black culture, food & dining, entertainment, and other lifestyle/feature topics like profiles, home/real estate, wellness/consumer health and others.

Directs and oversees the work of editorial managers and their staff.

Edits or supervises editing of journalistic content ranging from breaking news to complex and sophisticated analysis in print, audio, video, photos and graphical or data storytelling.

Leverages expertise and beat knowledge of the teams and their leaders to improve journalistic quality of storytelling across all areas of coverage.

Leads the planning and oversees execution of content strategies to ensure audience meets are met and audience is growing.

Sets a clear vision for all teams to serve journalistic products with essential and engaging content.

·Is responsible for ensuring all “beats” have robust coverage plans that can include newsletters, events, regular audio and video storytelling.

Represents the news organization and the company as a whole to the community, engaging with corporate, government and community leaders as an influential thought partner.

Serves on the senior newsroom leadership team, collaborating with other senior leaders on issues of newsroom culture, talent, training, coverage vision and standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
-
10+ years of relevant experience with at least 5 years of experience in a leadership role; 12+ years of relevant experience with at least 7 in leadership required for senior director.
Depending on skills and experience may qualify for either Director or Sr. Director level.

Bachelor’s or advanced degree in related field is preferred. (May substitute years of experience for degree.)

Demonstrated strong news judgment and excellent editing ability.

Demonstrated ability to lead teams to follow standards and execute large-scale news initiatives.

Strong ability to organize, analyze, interpret, and disseminate information.

Strong communication and presentation skills.

Track record of effectively partnering with different teams across newsrooms and the entire organization.

Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills to work effectively across groups.

Comfortable setting direction and drawing insight from multiple, conflicting data sources.
