An Inside Look at An Account Executive Role at Cox Business

We recently followed (virtually, that is) Terrence Richard for an inside look at a day-in-the-life of an Account Executive at Cox Business, part of the Cox family of businesses. Terrence’s job is to be immersed in the market trends and current events that impact small and mid-size businesses. And from what we can see, it’s a cool gig and after 11 years, he’s still making his mark at Cox.

Terrence, how do you get your day started?

First things first, when I wake up, I need my coffee. While drinking my coffee, I start to organize my day, and to be honest, each day is not the same – which is what I love. Each day is filled with lots of customer interaction, from working with new prospects to cultivating relationships with existing customers. I have also built a solid network of partners in my area that trust my ideas of how to leverage technology to positively impact their business.

That’s cool, so what’s your favorite part of your day?

As a trusted sales consultant, I spend part of my day preparing for appointments, which is super important to closing deals. My favorite part of the day is running sales calls and my wife sometimes gets jealous because she sees how happy I am to run meetings [laughter]. I tell her the magic happens on these sales calls. I get a return on investment to meet, listen, and learn about my clients’ business and provide ideas and solutions through Cox Business products to make their lives better.

What has led to your success at Cox?

I began my Cox career as a Direct Sales representative and while my time on that team was short-lived due to a merging market resulting in role elimination, I developed a resilience to adapt, grow new skills (in B2B marketing), and apply my expertise. That’s when I received a call from a Cox Business manager for an opportunity to return to Cox, and I accepted the role immediately as an Account Executive. I have aspirations to grow into a leadership position at Cox, and I’m proud to work for a company that has invested in my career with tuition reimbursement for my master’s degree and encouragement in my individual development goals for my career.

What else makes you great at what you do?

At a previous sales job, I worked in automotive sales and I had a customer who walked through the doors ready to purchase whichever vehicle they could qualify for – which is the dream of any sales agent. I was so excited to sell a car that day, that I missed an important step in the customer purchasing process that included important documentation. This resulted in the customer not being able to purchase a car that day and I was very disappointed. This lesson taught me a valuable lesson about having attention to detail. From that day forward I incorporated this habit into my day-to-day which has resulted in success, organization, and preparation for any situation.
