Sales Interview Advice June 2025 2

What does it take to stand out in a sales job interview?

That’s the question I posed to Jacqueline Estrella, a director of sales at Cox based in Las Vegas, NV. With years of experience building high-performing teams and meeting with countless candidates, she knows exactly what it takes to impress a hiring manager in a sales interview.

Unlike interviews for many other roles, a sales interview is more than a conversation — it’s a live demo of your skills. You’re not just answering questions; you’re preparing, presenting and engaging your interviewer, much like you would a potential client.

Here’s what she had to say about showcasing your sales strengths in the moment, plus a few easy-to-follow tips to help you close the deal during your next interview.

1. Do your research.

Before you walk into the interview, make sure you know your “audience” and what matters to them. It’s interviewing 101, but also a chance to demonstrate your sales skills in action.

“Prepare thoroughly for the interview by just getting to know us,” Jacqueline said. “Understand our mission, our goals for the year and the challenges we’re currently facing. It’s the same thing you do with customers: know their business.”

2. Engage in storytelling.

In sales interviews, facts and figures matter — but it’s your personal stories that will make you memorable.

“When interviewing, showcase specific achievements and metrics that demonstrate your success in previous sales roles and your industry knowledge,” Jacqueline explained. “Use real stories where you shine and your passion is evident. Highlight what makes you different and why you are the best fit for the role.”

3. Practice your presentation skills.

Your ability to present clearly and confidently is a key part of any sales job; so, expect to be tested on it during the interview.

“Presenting is a big part of our interview process because we want to make sure you can utilize applications and present with confidence,” Jacqueline said.

4. Be authentic.

If you’re genuinely excited about the job and the company, let it show. Passion matters, and at Cox, we’re not just hiring for experience; we’re investing in potential.

“Express how your values align with ours, and just let your passion and enthusiasm show through,” she said. “When you show you have a genuine interest in the role, it helps your chances of standing out as somebody we want to invest in.”
