Two senior recruiters at Cox share advice on how to put your best foot forward in a sales job interview.

Looking to land your next role in B2B, SaaS or tech sales? The competition is fierce in today’s job market, but there’s plenty you can do to set yourself apart.

In this quick guide, two senior recruiters at Cox share practical insider tips on how to shine in sales interviews, from structuring your stories with the STAR or CAR method to leveraging AI tools while practicing your answers.

1. Practice your stories and examples using the STAR or CAR methods.

When it comes to interviews, clear storytelling can make all the difference. Recruiters recommend using a structured approach like STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) or CAR (Context, Action, Result) to frame your examples. Focus on the situation you faced, the task at hand, the actions you took and the results you achieved.

“Be intentional about how you walk through your experience,” said Kayode “Ky” Oduwaiye, a senior recruiter at Cox. “If you can’t get your thoughts out in a meaningful way, it reflects on how you might interact with clients.”

2. Be ready to talk about failures.

Interviews are not just about highlighting wins. Recruiters also want to hear how you handle setbacks and what you’ve learned along the way. Being prepared to talk about a missed deal or an unsuccessful outcome shows self-awareness, resilience and growth.

“Any sales professional will tell you that you’re going to fail sometimes, and if they can’t admit that, they're not being honest,” explained Anthony Berardis, a senior recruiter at Cox.

What matters most is how you reflect on those moments, what you took away from them and whether you were able to apply those lessons to improve your approach and mitigate risk in the future.

3. Use AI to practice interviewing.

AI can be a helpful tool when you’re preparing for sales interviews, especially when it comes to organizing your thoughts and anticipating questions. Recruiters recommend using tools like Microsoft Copilot or ChatGPT to practice answering common interview questions or to pressure-test your examples.

“You can share the job description and ask what kinds of questions might come up,” Ky said. “Just remember that AI should be an assistant, not a replacement for your own voice.”

You could also use AI to help structure real examples using the STAR or CAR methods, refine talking points or identify gaps in their story. The goal is not to sound scripted, but to walk into the interview with sharper, more confident answers that still feel natural and authentic.

 4. Do a prep call with a recruiter before a panel interview.

If you’re invited to a panel interview, your recruiter may offer a prep call, Anthony said, and it’s an opportunity worth taking. These conversations can help you feel more confident about what to expect in the next stage of the process.

“Most recruiters offer prep calls before panel interviews, and sometimes even coffee chats with peers on the team,” Anthony said. “It’s a great opportunity to understand what the interview will look like and get a feel for the day-to-day role.”

Prep calls and informal conversations with potential teammates provide valuable context, ease nerves and help you walk into the interview prepared. If the opportunity is offered, taking advantage of it can make a meaningful difference in how ready you feel.

5. Follow up with a thank-you note.

Taking a moment to follow up with a simple “thank you” after an interview can go a long way to help you stand out in a competitive interview process, especially with hiring managers, Ky said.

“A lot of people don’t follow up after interviews,” Ky said. “Something as simple as saying, ‘It was great meeting you, I really appreciate your time,’ can make a strong impression.”

Preparation, perspective and presence are what separate strong candidates from standout ones. Show up with the right mindset, and you won’t just participate in the interview; you’ll prove you’re ready to close.
