Prioritizing Your Health at Work and Beyond

“Being healthy” can mean something different to everyone. It’s shaped by our backgrounds, experiences and priorities. For me, my health has been a journey of learning, awareness and, at times, hard lessons. Over time, I’ve learned how important it is to take a more proactive approach to caring for myself, and I’ve been fortunate to experience a culture at Cox that supports that mindset.
Earlier in life, I was a competitive athlete in high school and college, and I even had the opportunity to play professional football for a short time. However, injuries ultimately shifted my path and led me to focus on building a new career and finding purpose in new ways.
I want to take a moment to speak directly to something many of us, especially men, are often conditioned to overlook. We’re taught to push through pain, ignore discomfort and keep going no matter what. While resilience is important, ignoring your health can come at a real cost — lost time, missed opportunities and in some cases, your life. Paying attention to your body, seeking care when something feels off and prioritizing your well-being are not signs of weakness. They are signs of responsibility, courage and self-respect.
Your body speaks to you every day. Persistent pain, unusual fatigue, chest discomfort, sudden weight changes or even shifts in mood are signs worth noticing. Many serious conditions begin quietly, and delaying care can turn manageable issues into serious problems.
In my case, I suffered a severe ankle injury that ended my athletic career in my 20s. Two years later, I began experiencing shortness of breath and went to the emergency room. I ended up in ICU and was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism — blood clots that formed in my leg after the injury had traveled to my heart and lungs.
It was a life-changing moment.
Listening to your body gives you options. It allows you to take action early and stay ahead of potential health challenges. In my case, recognizing that something wasn’t right and acting on it made all the difference.
One of the most powerful things you can do is stay consistent with preventive care. Routine checkups and annual physicals help catch issues before symptoms become serious, and the good news is you don’t have to navigate that alone. At Cox, comprehensive health coverage makes it easier to stay on top of your care, so you can prioritize your well-being before something feels urgent.
Taking care of your health is not just about you. It’s about being present for your family, showing up for your responsibilities and living the life you want to live. That’s why a culture of well-being matters.
At Cox, we talk about showing up as our best selves, and there’s a real emphasis on making space for your health. Whether it’s having the flexibility to step away for a walk, to schedule a doctor’s appointment or to build time into your day to move and recharge, those moments are recognized as essential, not optional. When you feel supported in taking care of yourself, it becomes easier to stay consistent and proactive.
