Job duties for an automotive technician vary based on specializations, place of employment and skill level. Automotive technicians use various tools and equipment to diagnose and repair problems with vehicles. This can include performing inspections, conducting diagnostic tests and repairing or replacing parts as needed. 

Yes, the automotive industry is rapidly evolving with the increasing use of electric and autonomous vehicles. There is a need for people that have the skills to fix them. Your earnings potential will grow as you learn and develop your skill set. 

There are several ways to become a certified auto technician.

  1. Community colleges, technical schools and vocational schools offer automotive technology programs. These programs range in length from 6 months to 2 years.

  2. Several organizations offer certifications for automotive technicians. One is the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

  3. You can obtain an auto mechanic manufacturer specific certification. This certification allows you to become certified in specific brands such as Ford, Honda and Volkswagen. These certifications can be pursued through a trade school or vocational school.

The future is bright! The demand for technicians will increase as more advanced technologies are integrated into modern vehicles. It's a great career for people who love cars, enjoy hands-on work and can work both independently and as part of a team.

These two words are often used interchangeably; however, there are some differences between technician and mechanic. An auto technician has often completed formal training or education in automotive technology. A mechanic is someone that works with vehicles but may not have completed formal training or education. Mechanics often work in independent repair shops and perform basic repairs on older vehicles.
