Damian Paredes Wanted Career Growth. He Found That and Much More.

With 15 years of customer service experience under his belt, Damian Paredes applied to Cox seeking a role with more growth potential. What he’s experienced has been far beyond his expectations.
“Going from a company that really didn’t do much to Cox, which does everything for you, the opportunities are endless — and I take advantage of all of it,” he explained.
In the five years since he joined Cox Communications, Damian has had opportunities to grow his career and take on new projects, such as bringing more affordable internet options to lower income households and serving as a product ambassador within both the company and the community. More recently, Damian has been responsible for coaching and guiding new hires through their onboarding and training as a senior sales support specialist.
Damian credits his journey largely to Cox’s culture of empowering team members to find new opportunities within the company.
“It’s all about how far you want to go and how far you want to take your career,” he explained. “You just have to be proactive with it, and then all the resources are there for you.”
One such resource Damian has discovered is the company’s open-door policy that’s upheld by its leaders. He’s had the opportunity to reach out and meet department heads across different locations and parts of the business. Getting to hear people’s stories and learning from their experiences has helped Damian in mapping out his own career journey.
“A lot of companies don’t let you skip the chain of command,” he explained. “But here, everybody has an open-door policy.”
Damian added that his own team leaders have also encouraged him to find his perfect fit at Cox, helping him connect with other departments and sometimes even allowing him to shadow the department for a few days, “which is pretty neat,” he said.
Taking advantage of all Cox has to offer
While finding growth and advancement is what drew Damian to a job at Cox, he’s been impressed by all the employee perks that the company offers, from a generous 401(k) with company match to tuition reimbursement to volunteer time off to be active in the community. While Cox offers many traditional benefits like retirement plans, health insurance and paid time off, team members also have access to many unique programs.
One such benefit Damian has taken advantage of is Cox’s leadership training programs, which helped him gain new skills. As an example, Damian recently participated in a coaching academy program where he met with individuals from different departments multiple times each week to learn how to motivate and lead teams.
“It was really beneficial,” he said. “I learned so much.”
Another way Damian has built community with people across the company is as an ambassador for ¡HOLA! (a Cox employee resource group) and by participating in company volunteer initiatives. Examples of past volunteer efforts include providing Thanksgiving meals to families, packing meals for schools, planting trees in the community and immersive projects to help kids spark an interest in science and technology.
“It’s always been fun to do that,” he said, adding that these events also allow him to meet more coworkers from other departments. “These events bring us closer together and show us that we’re one team, one dream.”
Building the foundation for others’ experiences
One of the reasons Damian enjoys his current role as a senior sales support specialist is because it gives him a chance to “pay it forward” by helping new team members at Cox.
“When I first came on board, the people who were in the position I am in now impacted me so much by how much they cared. I always appreciated that,” he explained.
Just as others have supported Damian in his career from day one at Cox, he strives to set a solid foundation for new team members to succeed in their careers and chart their own paths within Cox.
Whether it’s through his job or his other activities within life at Cox, Damian is all about nurturing the company culture he loves.
“There’s so much good this company has done for me,” Damian added. “It’s just the little I can do to pay it back, you know?”
