The Level II Automotive Technician is a mid-level technician responsible for performing preventive maintenance, vehicle diagnostics, and light to major mechanical repairs. The technician is expected to perform routine repairs independently while also working effectively within a team environment.

Level II Technicians must demonstrate strong diagnostic ability, quality workmanship, proper documentation, productivity, and a commitment to safety and customer service.

Finalized technicians will work a day-shift schedule with a rotating Saturday every other week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, including oil and filter changes, fuel filters, transmission services, and vehicle inspections.
  • Inspect vehicles for mechanical, electrical, safety, and maintenance-related deficiencies.
  • Perform light to major mechanical repairs based on experience, training, and certification level.
  • Perform advanced vehicle diagnostics using scan tools, diagnostic equipment, service information, and established troubleshooting procedures.
  • Diagnose and repair: Brake systems Steering and suspension Tires and wheel-related concerns Starting and charging systems Electrical systems OBD-II and drivability concerns Emissions systems HVAC systems Engine and driveline components Interior and exterior components Hydraulic systems, when applicable
  • Perform state safety and emissions inspections when properly certified.
  • Accurately document diagnostic results, repairs performed, parts replaced, and recommended repairs.
  • Create and maintain accurate vehicle maintenance and repair history.
  • Perform quality checks to ensure repairs are completed correctly before vehicle release.
  • Coordinate with parts departments, vendors, and management to ensure repairs are completed promptly.
  • Provide roadside assistance when required.
  • Perform moderate fabrication or welding tasks when trained and qualified.
  • Troubleshoot specialized vehicle systems, including hydraulic systems, generators, hybrid systems, electrical systems, and onboard computer systems when applicable.
  • Maintain and properly use shop tools and equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Properly handle and dispose of automotive fluids and materials in accordance with established safety and environmental requirements.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, team members, vendors, and management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Level II Performance Expectations

A Level II Technician should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Complete routine repairs independently with limited supervision.
  • Diagnose common mechanical and electrical concerns.
  • Use scan tools and diagnostic equipment effectively.
  • Follow established diagnostic and repair procedures rather than replacing parts based solely on fault codes.
  • Produce accurate and complete repair documentation.
  • Consistently perform quality repairs with minimal comebacks.
  • Meet established productivity and efficiency expectations.
  • Recognize repairs that are beyond their current skill or certification level and seek assistance when necessary.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, professionalism, and teamwork.
  • Continue developing technical skills toward advancement to Level III Technician.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, or 3+ years of related vehicle service experience in lieu of education requirements.
  • Minimum of 3 years of vehicle service and repair experience.
  • Working knowledge of automotive mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Ability to operate standard and automatic transmission vehicles.
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Ability to properly operate automotive hand tools, power tools, scan tools, and diagnostic equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASE Automotive, Truck, or other applicable industry certifications.
  • Continued participation in technical training to maintain certifications and stay current with changes in vehicle technology.
  • Experience diagnosing electrical, drivability, engine performance, steering/suspension, brake, HVAC, and other vehicle systems.

To be employed in this role, you'll need to clear a pre-employment drug test. Cox Automotive does not currently administer a pre-employment drug test for marijuana for this position. However, we are a drug-free workplace, so the possession, use or being under the influence of drugs illegal under federal or state law during work hours, on company property and/or in company vehicles is prohibited.

Compensation:

Hourly pay rate is in the range of $22.02 - $33.08/hour. The hourly base rate may vary within the anticipated range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include commission (annual, monthly, etc.) and/or an incentive program.

Benefits:

Employees are eligible to receive a minimum of sixteen hours of paid time off every month and seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are also eligible for additional paid time off in the form of bereavement leave, time off to vote, jury duty leave, volunteer time off, military leave, and parental leave.
