Cox Gigs Program Honored at 2024 Learning in Practice Awards

Chief Learning Officer (CLO), the foremost publication in the learning and development industry, named Cox Enterprises as one of the winners of its annual Learning in Practice Awards in recognition of our experiential learning program, Cox Gigs.
Learning is at the heart of a fulfilling career, and it’s even more powerful when your employer champions that journey.
At Cox, we believe that investing in employees’ development not only enhances individual potential but drives our collective success. We’re thrilled that one of Cox’s most innovative programs — Cox Gigs — was recognized at the Chief Learning Officer’s 2024 Learning in Practice Awards.
Cox Gigs allows employees to apply for and take on stretch assignments anywhere within our network of companies. Each gig is a short-term, part-time assignment for a defined project in a different department or division.
It gives participants a chance to get outside of their day-to-day jobs for a few hours a week while honing their skills or developing new ones — and making connections along the way. At the same time, the program gives leaders an opportunity to post a short-term “gig” on their team and work with someone across the company on a specific project. It’s a win-win situation.
“Cox Gigs is something that was created at Cox to support both career advancement and business success,” said Kristi Lawson, Senior Director of Enterprise Talent Development at Cox. “Those are project-based assignments you can do off the side of your desk. You get to flex your skills, network, contribute to another part of the company and you ultimately progress in your career.”
This year, Cox has been awarded The Business Partnership Award, which recognizes learning departments’ progressive employee development programs that also successfully support business goals.
“The Learning in Practice Awards showcase the best and brightest in corporate learning and development,” Ashley St. John, chief content officer, editor-in-chief of Chief Learning Officer, said in an announcement about the award winners. “This year’s winners have shown exceptional innovation and dedication in advancing their organizations’ learning initiatives, particularly in the face of rapidly evolving workplace dynamics.”
The variety of businesses and industries within Cox is one of the things that makes our company unique. And Cox Gigs provides an avenue to sample different parts of the company from the comfort of your day job.
For Matt Kriess, who’s been at Cox for 17 years in field operations, taking on a Cox Gig in HR allowed him to work on a highly visible project and present his work to senior leaders. The impact of his contributions during his gig also became a major talking point during the interview process for his latest role at Cox.
“That gig I did has yielded so many fruits, from benefits to my career to the connections and relationships I’ve made,” he said. “Doing something totally different also gave me a lot more confidence.”
