One of the keys to thriving in your career is to continually learn, improve and enhance your skills. And working for an employer that is equally invested in your career growth can make all the difference.

Imagine starting each week not only to focus on your job responsibilities, but also pursue a path of learning and exploration. This is how it is when you work for a company that truly cares about your career development.

At Cox, our people are our greatest asset — and we’re committed to helping them achieve their greatest potential. We offer a variety of learning and development opportunities to make it easier for employees to continue their journey of lifelong learning and professional growth, from mentorship to stretch assignments to expert-led courses.

“We’re ahead of the curve when it comes to development opportunities,” said Erica Moore, learning and development senior manager at Cox. “We’re trying to make it easy for people to feel empowered to own their career.”

What types of learning and development resources does Cox offer?

At Cox, we have a track record of helping people advance their careers and promoting from within. Here’s a look at the resources we offer employees to get them ready for that next step in their careers:

  • Short- and long-term mentoring programs to help employees navigate their career and expand their network.
  • Minute Mentoring offers virtual and in-person opportunities for mentees to have brief, targeted conversations with a Cox leader without a long-term commitment.
  • The Cox Gigs program allows employees to expand their experience in a short-term project in a different department or division.

““What I think is so cool about Cox Gigs is that we’re solving business problems and we’re giving people development. It’s the most ideal win-win I can think of.””

  • Our tuition assistance program offers reimbursement to full and part-time employees for courses at any accredited educational institution.
  • Learn@Cox is our learning management system — think of it as our one-stop shop for customized skill-building courses.
  • Free access to LinkedIn Learning’s full collection of videos, playlists and personalized learning journeys.
  • We offer the ability to self-reflect and receive feedback through the Culture Amp 360 assessment program. “Another cool thing we do for self-awareness is everyone has an opportunity to take a 360 for free, which we cover,” Erica said. “That is unheard of.”
  • Our Enterprise Talent Development Catalog helps employees plan out their development goals through courses in the areas of business transformation, communication and career planning.

““If you’re not ready for a full mentoring relationship, Minute Mentoring is an easy way to go talk to somebody and receive the guidance you need without a lot of lift. We want to meet our folks where they are.””

What sets learning and development at Cox apart?

Erica has seen Cox’s approach to learning and development evolve into a cross-divisional, enterprise-wide catalogue. This approach of cross-divisional learning not only allows employees to hear from experts across different businesses and industries, but also consider all the career possibilities available to them within Cox’s family of businesses.

“Making learning cross-divisional is super intentional with the goal of increasing internal mobility and increasing awareness of what’s available to you,” she said.

Another key to our successful culture of learning is that we lean on both internal and external subject-matter experts.

“I think what we do well is a blend of both,” Erica said. “You get that internal expertise, how it’s particular to our culture and how we are actually applying it — and you also get that external perspective of the industry.”

For example, we host regular development workshops with external experts, from learning to speak with executive presence, establishing your personal brand, learning to advocate for yourself and practicing different presentations styles.

Employees at Cox also share their expertise with others. For example, employees who used to work at the big four management consulting firms teach a course on consulting basics.

“We have our own folks teaching their own content, which I also think is really unique to us,” Erica said.

Employees have so many ways they can make the most of learning and development at Cox. Our goal is to make our people feel that they are constantly improving themselves, and that they have ample opportunities to advance their careers at Cox.

“We tout that your career can be a jungle gym here and that only works if you know where your next step is,” she said. “We’re trying to make sure you have a clear view of that.”
