How a Former NFL Player Leads with a Team-First Mindset at Cox

Before the crowds, the draft pick and several seasons in the NFL, Vincent Butler learned one of his biggest lessons in teamwork because he was late to a 6 a.m. workout at Penn State.

When a missing set of workout clothes delayed him by just a few minutes, the entire team paid the price: everyone had to run sprints.

“I learned a lot about accountability and preparation,” Vincent says. “And a lot of it is on you as far as discipline.”

That was a moment that stayed with him long after football: into his IT career at Cox Communications and into the way he now leads his own team. Because for Vincent, sports were never just about individual performance; they were about shared purpose and helping the people around you succeed.

Today, whether he’s mentoring young professionals, helping his employees grow their careers or giving back in the community, he still approaches leadership the same way he approached football: with a team-first mindset.

Learning to work toward something bigger than yourself

In football, success depends on more than talent. It requires trust, preparation and every player doing their part.

At Penn State, that mentality was reinforced daily. Individual recognition was never the focus. Instead, players were taught to let their work ethic and performance speak for themselves.

“The coach that I played for was really big on that,” Vincent said. “If you make plays and your name stands out, people will know you.”

The sport also taught Vincent how to work alongside people from completely different backgrounds, perspectives and personalities. Long before entering the professional world, he learned how to “navigate different spaces and communicate effectively,” he said.

These lessons continue to shape how Vincent approaches his role as a manager of engineering and product development at Cox: by building strong relationships, supporting others and working toward shared goals.

Playing with purpose on and off the field

While football taught Vincent discipline and teamwork, it also showed him the importance of community impact.

During his NFL career, he participated in outreach initiatives like the league’s Play 60 campaign and other community programs focused on encouraging kids to stay active and engaged. Those experiences helped him realize the influence athletes can have beyond the game itself.

“You learn quickly that people are paying attention to what you say and do,” Vincent said.

That sense of responsibility has stayed with him throughout his career and aligns closely with the culture he’s found at Cox Communications, where community involvement and service remain a major focus.

Today, Vincent continues to mentor young people and early-career professionals, often sharing lessons he wishes someone had shared with him earlier in life. Sometimes that means helping young athletes understand the realities of professional sports. Other times, it simply means encouraging someone to see possibilities for themselves beyond what they originally imagined.

Vincent currently leads a team of eight employees and sees leadership as an opportunity to help others develop new skills, take the next step in their careers and realize their potential. “I want to have a positive impact on others,” he said.

Whether he’s supporting his team at work or mentoring kids in the community, Vincent sees “playing with purpose” as using his experiences to make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.
